Studio Figur and Dawn Collective join forces in Kakek, Opa & Ik: a compelling, visual theatre experience about origin and identity, in which puppetry, live cinema and music come together. They find each other in making stories that are right at the heart of our time. They do not avoid the pain points of our society, but rather make them felt.
“Why do I feel so angry?” Sometimes it feels like a storm lives in Novi's chest. No one knows why. And she certainly doesn't. One day, when the storm rages again, Novi flees to the attic. An old, dusty place full of boxes, yellowed photos and the smell of a long time ago. But then something strange happens: two mysterious figures appear, fighting, roaring, and when they see Novi, fleeing. They each disappear in a different photo book. And Novi? He's jumping after it.
In Kakek, Grandpa & I, Novi dives into the hidden stories of her family. Through old photo books, letters and forgotten melodies, she travels back in time, to a past that is slowly coming to life. What begins as a playful journey of discovery to where she comes from grows into a magical journey through her family history, and to a shared colonial past of the Netherlands and Indonesia that still works through in the present.
