Jane Austen’s world-famous novel Pride and Prejudice is a timeless classic and widely regarded as a feminist masterpiece. Not only was it written by a woman, it also brought the everyday woman into public view at the start of the nineteenth century. Generations have grown up with this story, which went on to shape the blueprint for a wave of hugely successful romantic comedies in the 1990s. Yet, seen through today’s lens, these retellings have paradoxically reinforced problematic ideas about the roles of both women and men. It is therefore high time to reignite Pride and Prejudice as the piece of social dynamite it was when first published. Director Florian Myjer propels the story into the present and, through a queer perspective, creates a theatrical evening that entertains, moves, and provokes reflection. Pride & Prejudice is both a heartfelt bow to Jane Austen and a bold attack on harmful social structures, performed by three actors who take on every role. With a playful nod to costume drama, they rip out the roots of patriarchy with force—still festive and full of flair, but also uncompromising, vulnerable, and unmistakably contemporary.
